Ainhoa ​​Garmendia was born in Legorreta (Guipúzcoa). She studied accordion, singing and piano at the academy of Ordizia with Pello Ramirez and Amalia Ibañez (Coro Oroith) before entering Orfeón Donostiarra in San Sebastian where she worked the vocal technique with Almudena Ortega and featured some soloists parts. She moved to Madrid where continued her studies at the Manuel Cid Higher School of Singing and later at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna (Helena Lazarska).

Awarded in several national and international competitions, she became part of the Opera Estudio de Marseille (CNIPAL). Between 2001 and 2009 the Leipzig Opera  contracted her, there she debuted almost all the main characters of her current repertoire. In 2006, she debuted at the Glyndebourne Festival in Così fan tutte (Despina) and at the PROMS of Royal Albert Hall in London. She debuted at the great Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona in the role of Servilia (La Clamenza di Tito) and in Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), at the Teatro Real de Madrid (Orphée et Eurydice with Juan Diego Flórez), in the Vlaamse Opera (Susanna) in the 15th Musical of San Sebastián (Micaela). She also debuts at the Frankfurt Opera (Susanna) and at the Stuttgart Opera (Servilia). In this same year it was named «voice revelation» by the Spanish music critic in the awards of the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo.

During the summer of 2009, it causes a sensation at the Glyndebourne Festival masterfully ensuring a last-minute replacement at the premiere of L’elisir d’amore (Adina). In 2009/10, L’Arbore di Diana (Britomarte) sings in Barcelona and Madrid, Don Giovanni (Zerlina) in Oviedo, Le Nozze di Figaro (Susanna) in Bilbao and Toulon. In 2011/12, Norina (Don Pasquale) in Glyndebourne on tour, Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) and Musetta (La Boheme) at the Liceo de Barcelona. He also participates in the Beethoven Missa Solemnis concert in Padova (Italy) under the direction of Szolt Hamar. Ainhoa ​​has also sung in Colombia and Korea. Since 2014 she is the founder and artistic director of Opus Lirica of San Sebastián, and works to create a new stable Opera season with the city’s institutions. His last roles have been Mimi in the Boheme, Euridice in Orpheus (Gluck) and Pamina(2019) in the Magic Flute.
